Several years before she died, and while quite lucid, my mother revealed to me that she had a baby girl by my father, prior to their marriage. That baby was delivered by a midwife named PAGANO or PAGLIANO, on the second floor of a 2-family house on East Street, in New Haven, CT., about a week prior to Pagano/Pagliano's arrest for the death of a woman for whom she had performed an abortion. No report of that arrest was found on the New Haven police blotter.
My mother saw the baby's head, arms and legs and was told "It's a girl." She said the baby looked full term and "normal." But Pagano/Pagliano took the baby away and later told my mother the baby was "stillborn." Pagano/Pagliano collected additional money from my father "for a grave." But there is no grave, no birth or death record.
It's possible that Pagano/Pagliano sold the baby, possibly for adoption. Vividly remembering details back more than 50 years, except for exact date of birth, my mother recalled she had the baby "before the Great New England Hurricane" which hit New Haven on Sept. 21, 1938, and "about a week prior to seeing a report of Pagano/Pagliano's arrest in the morning edition of The Journal-Courier or Daily Leader". A record has been found about a Shirley Cobb who died Oct. 22, 1938 in New Haven as result of an abortion performed around Sept. 15, 1938--but it did not identify Pagano/Pagliano or anyone else. So I am looking for a woman born in September 1938.
