MBL Tournament, Week #1
So I’ve been logging-in to the Milwaukee’s Best website every day for the past couple of weeks. For six Sundays, they have a 400-500 person NLHE tournament. The top 100 finishers each week get a set of poker chips, and the winner gets an entry into the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event!
The first tournament was supposed to be last Sunday, but they had some technical difficulties, and had to reschedule it for Saturday. So I had two chances at the grand prize! I had just read a great article on winning large field tournaments at PocketFives.com , and I was anxious to try out some of bfactor’s methods.
For me, his methods didn’t work so good. Twice my flopped two-pair was the second best hand, and it took less than fifteen minutes for me to be out of the tournament. I finished 386th out of 407 entrants, and I felt like a complete idiot for thinking that I had a legitimate shot to win the thing.
Thankfully, Sunday’s tournament was an entirely different story. An hour beforehand, I ‘warmed up’ with a couple of PokerStars SNG turbo tournaments. I believe that really made a difference. It gave me the confidence to make the big bets when it counted, and the patience to wait until it was prudent to do so!
Two-and-a-half hours later, with 25 players left, I hit my high watermark for the tournament. Second place! I really did have a legitimate shot at going to Vegas!

With thirteen players left and the blinds breathing down everyone’s neck, I get KTs in the big blind. With only one smooth caller, I decide to make my stand there.

A pair of kings looks good! There’s only one card that can realistically beat my hand, and that is…
** Dealing River ** [A♥] KurtW shows [A♠ 5♠] One Pair [A♠ A♥ K♦ J♣ 5♠] . JoseRijo27 doesn't show. KurtW wins 51432 from the main pot .
An ace! He rivered an ace!
A couple of hands later, my pair of queens don’t look so pretty after an A-K-3 flop, and I’m out of the tournament in twelfth place. Using my chips, KurtW finished in third. Vegas will have to wait another week.
